Components of the cigarette
Another element is the so-called smoke components which are produced as a result of the combustion of the product: thousands of chemical substances that are generated in the form of gases or particles. Among these are nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide.
Nicotine exists in a natural form in the tobacco plant (in a larger proportion than in any other plant) and is a component of the smoke of tobacco. Health authorities hold that nicotine is responsible for the difficulties that people confront when attempting to quit the smoking habit.
Tar is a complex mixture of substances contained in tobacco and which can be obtained in laboratories with the aid of filters once water vapor and nicotine are removed from the cigarette smoke. Certain components in tar have been identified by health authorities as health risky as a consequence of smoking. Among such risks is cancer.

Also as a result of the combustion, carbon monoxide is generated, which is a gas that is formed when the organic substances are burned. Health authorities have associated carbon monoxide with the risks related to heart diseases as a consequence of the habit of smoking.
